Social Media Spiritual
Myths in the Feed: Poems of Performance, Pain & Persistence
by Heather Kays (Crying Heart Press)
People say, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but I was spellbound by a single image at first glance. The artwork that preceded my exposure to Myths in the Feed felt like a digital mystic revelation, appearing on my Instagram feed by way of Crying Heart Press, as if gifted to me personally, dropped off via the often unpredictable yet unmistakably clutch delivery service that is divine timing. Heather Kays has arrived with a devastatingly understated masterpiece, achieving through highly quoteable photo-caption and bite-sized bio ready profoundities, the awe-inspiring feat of making social media spiritual. Both an identity crisis and an emergency reconstructive surgery, this poetry collection felt like a character study of the 21st century, a concise and definite must-read.
Divided into five parts, and followed by a single poem epilogue, the craft and intention behind the alluring conceptual aesthetic of this book is both apparent and frankly immaculate. It would be easy for an average reviewer to say that this collection is, “For fans of Rupi Kaur, Amanda Lovelace, and the highly commercial institution that is Instapoetry”. However, that would ultimately be a huge disservice to the intelligence Kays weaves her words with. The thoughtful titles of each piece presented here, allow her to serve hard earned wisdom that has been discovered through critical self-reflection with a supreme restraint. Many writers these days try to approach the algorithm for higher visibility and financial gain, but Kays defensively shoots it at point blank range, then stumbles into the bathroom to wash the blood off her face, but not before taking the perfect selfie.
